Family Farm Boosts Milk Production by 233% Using Management Changes

A family farm in Seara, Santa Catarina, has dramatically increased its milk production from 6,000 to 20,000 liters per month, achieving a 233% rise without expanding their herd of 36 cows. The Hartmann family accomplished this feat by overhauling their farm management strategies rather than increasing the number of livestock.

Initially, the farm faced financial challenges and issues related to nutrition and herd management. Inspired by successful technical guidance in their sheep farming operations, the family sought similar assistance for their dairy activities through the Sindicato Rural of Seara. This decision led to significant improvements in their milk output.

Key changes included reorganizing pasture areas into modules and paddocks, optimizing feeding schedules to enhance the cows' productivity potential, and installing water troughs near the milking area to ensure better hydration for the animals. These adjustments were implemented based on continuous advice from technical experts.

Eloide Hartmann highlighted the importance of following the technical instructions consistently, stating, "We didn't increase the herd. We just put into practice what the technician advised us, month by month."

Additionally, the family improved their financial management by closely monitoring production costs, which helped them balance their finances, build an emergency reserve, and plan future investments with confidence.

Their success coincides with a broader growth trend in Santa Catarina's dairy industry. According to data from the Epagri/Cepa Agricultural Bulletin, national milk collection reached 27.51 billion liters, an 8.4% increase. Santa Catarina ranks fourth among Brazil's top milk-producing states, contributing 3.5 billion liters, or about 13% of the national output. The state's dairy sector is a crucial income source for small and medium-sized farms and generates employment across the supply chain.
