ERCMPU to Seek Milk Price Hike Amid Rising Production Costs

Dairy farmers in Kerala face financial challenges as production costs rise, encouraging ERCMPU to call for milk price hikes.

The Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (ERCMPU), representing the districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, and Thrissur, is advocating for a price increase of milk due to soaring production costs and labor wages.
Chairman Valsalan Pillai noted that insufficient income relative to costs is causing small and marginal dairies to exit the sector. At a recent meeting in Ernakulam, ERCMPU decided to urge the Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) to adjust milk prices to mitigate these economic pressures.
The chairman stressed the essential role of governmental intervention to prevent a crisis, citing climate change and cattle diseases as exacerbating factors.
The proposed increase is by at least ₹10 per packet to make dairy farming more sustainable and to halt the declining milk production in Kerala, which currently leans heavily on neighbouring states for supply.
