In a major push towards rural economic empowerment and dairy self-reliance, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has called on women in Madhira to lead the nation in dairy production under the revived Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme.
Empowering Rural Women: Telangana’s Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme Revives Vision for Dairy-Led Growth in Madhira

Originally conceptualised in 2013, the vision aimed to transform the dairy landscape by providing two milch cows each to over 52,000 women from self-help groups. Although the initiative was shelved due to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it has now been revitalised under the People’s Government, aligning with the broader objectives of inclusive rural development and dairy sector expansion.

The scheme offers comprehensive support, including the provision of livestock, veterinary care, fodder supply, and streamlined milk procurement. The goal is to foster women’s entrepreneurship, elevate household incomes, and build a resilient community-based dairy ecosystem.

“It was my lifelong dream to establish a dairy network that directly benefits women at the grassroots,” Vikramarka stated, underscoring the long-term potential of Madhira to become a benchmark for women-led dairy enterprises in India.

The Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme aims not just at increasing milk production capacity, but also at nurturing community-owned dairy clusters, a model that aligns with sustainable dairy farming principles. By supporting female-led micro dairy units, the scheme is expected to enhance livelihood security and promote inclusive growth in Telangana’s rural belt.

Government officials anticipate a rise in rural employment, improved access to veterinary infrastructure, and strengthened dairy cooperative linkages, ultimately reinforcing Madhira’s position in the Indian dairy industry. The initiative is being seen as a timely intervention amidst growing concerns over milk supply shortages, and adds momentum to the state’s broader dairy development roadmap.

As the Indian dairy sector navigates rapid changes, the Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme stands out as a visionary effort blending social equity, economic development, and dairy innovation.
