Efficiency in Dairy Farming Links to Lower Carbon Emissions

A recent report by the Educampo program, conducted by Sebrae Minas, has revealed significant insights into dairy farming in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study analyzed 80 farms and found that those with lower carbon emissions also exhibited superior economic and productive performance. The average carbon emission recorded was 1.15 kg of CO2 equivalent per kilogram of milk produced.

This finding suggests a direct relationship between productivity and sustainability, as more efficient systems are linked with improved economic and zootechnical outcomes. Key factors contributing to better performance include higher productivity per cow, improved feed management, and a higher proportion of lactating animals.

The analysis encompassed data from 18,800 animals on farms producing over 95 million kilograms of milk annually. This large sample size lends credibility to the findings, which indicate that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is linked to productive efficiency.

Furthermore, the average emissions from these Brazilian farms were reported to be lower than international averages cited by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which range from 2.4 to 2.5 kg of CO2 equivalent per kilogram of milk.

The study emphasizes that productive efficiency can be measured through various indicators, all pointing towards improved economic outcomes and environmental performance. As the dairy industry faces ongoing pressures related to costs, productivity, and competitiveness, these findings underscore the importance of efficient management in linking economic and environmental goals.

For stakeholders in the dairy supply chain, the message is clear: effective management strategies are crucial for achieving sustainable production and better economic results, aligning performance across diverse aspects of dairy farming.
