Dorset Farmer Advocates Harmony Between Agriculture and Rewilding

Helen Rogers, co-owner of Longmoor Farm and director at Friars Moor Livestock Health, is advocating for the coexistence of productive agriculture and environmental restoration. She believes these goals should not be seen as mutually exclusive. Her remarks come as the farming community anticipates a special screening of the documentary 'Derek vs Derek' at Marnhull Village Hall, near Sturminster Newton, on July 23.

The documentary, directed by James Dawson, contrasts the methods of two Devon farmers named Derek. Derek Banbury focuses on intensive dairy production, while Derek Gow is known for habitat restoration and reintroducing native species like beavers. Rogers emphasized that the film presents a provocative view but suggests a balanced approach is possible.

Rogers explained that, at Longmoor Farm, they manage a high-production dairy operation while also engaging in countryside regeneration, integrating nature into various aspects of their system. The event, hosted by Friars Moor Livestock Health in collaboration with Costain of Farm Gate, aims to encourage open dialogue among farmers about the future of agriculture.

The screening is part of a broader campaign to show 'Derek vs Derek' to 10,000 farmers across the UK, while also raising funds for The Farming Community Network (FCN). An optional barbecue and drinks will be offered post-screening, providing further opportunities for discussion.

Rogers highlighted the importance of involving young farmers in these conversations, stating, "Bringing people together to talk openly, and making sure young farmers are part of that discussion, matters as much as the farming itself.” The documentary is scheduled for a nationwide cinema release on October 2, 2026.
