Dilson da Silva Doubles Dairy Output with Innovative Techniques

Fazenda São Pedro, managed by Dilson Geraldo da Silva, has set an ambitious goal to double its milk production in the next three years without increasing the herd size. Located in Bocaiuva, Minas Gerais, the farm spans 128 hectares and recently earned the Fazenda Ouro certification for quality and sustainability in dairy production.

The farm's success is partly due to strategic investments in genetics, beginning with the acquisition of a Holstein bull for genetic improvement. Subsequently, the farm adopted artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, using embryos from genetically advanced farms to enhance herd quality and productivity.

In response to regional droughts, the farm employs a semi-confinement system, utilizing pasture during the rainy season and relying on silage, sugarcane, and irrigated areas when necessary. Recently, four hectares were dedicated to irrigation, ensuring a consistent food supply for the livestock.

Technological advancements have transformed farm operations, with the introduction of mechanical milking machines and expansion tanks replacing traditional systems. The farm now produces an average of 700 liters of milk daily, shipped to Montes Claros.

Notably, the farm avoids using oxytocin or other medications to stimulate milk production, allowing a natural process facilitated by calf presence during milking.

The farm's growth is supported by a long-standing partnership with Sicoob Credinor, which has financed various improvements, and participation in the Norte Empreendedor program offering financial management and strategic planning consultations.

Dilson emphasizes disciplined and gradual growth, focusing on efficiency and innovation rather than merely expanding herd size. His approach underscores the importance of structured planning and continuous improvement in achieving sustainable agricultural development.
