Devon MP Engages with Local Businesses on Agricultural and Automotive Challenges

Central Devon MP Sir Mel Stride recently conducted visits to businesses in Bradninch and Lapford to engage with local stakeholders about the challenges facing the rural economy. These visits focused on the dairy farming sector and independent garages, shedding light on the various pressures these industries face.

At Park Farm near Bradninch, Sir Mel met with representatives from Müller UK & Ireland and local dairy farmer Mark Persey. Discussions centered around the key issues impacting the dairy industry, including increasing operational costs, stringent environmental regulations, and the scarcity of labor. The need for long-term investment certainty was also a significant topic of concern.

Müller, a prominent player in the UK's dairy sector, procures approximately 20% of the country's milk production, collaborating with over 1,000 British dairy farmers. Sir Mel emphasized the strategic importance of British agriculture and food manufacturing in supporting jobs, investment, and food security nationwide.

Mark Persey expressed the importance of stability and investment for the continuity of high-quality British food production, stating that such factors are crucial for farms like his to thrive in the future.

In Lapford, Sir Mel visited the Lapford Cross MOT & Car Sales, where he met owner Mike Squires. The visit included discussions about the challenges and opportunities for independent garages, which play a vital role in providing essential services to motorists and supporting local economies.

Mike Squires, who has been operating his business for 25 years, highlighted the focus on customer service and future investments amid sector pressures. Sir Mel noted the importance of understanding practical challenges faced by small businesses both locally and nationally.

These visits are part of Sir Mel's ongoing engagement with businesses across Central Devon, aiming to gather insights and address the concerns of various industry sectors.
