De Heus Animal Nutrition officially opened a new livestock feed manufacturing facility in Athi River, Machakos County, Kenya, on February 18, 2026. The plant, constructed with an investment of KES 3 billion (approximately USD 23 million), has a production capacity of 240,000 metric tonnes annually. This development aligns with De Heus' commitment to Africa’s agricultural growth and livestock productivity.

The facility is designed to provide high-quality feed solutions to poultry, pig, and cattle farmers, promoting farm efficiency and sustainable protein production. Local workforce engagement and technical expertise from De Heus' African business units played a crucial role in the construction of the plant.

Co de Heus, Chairman of the Board, emphasized the company's confidence in Kenya's economy and agricultural sector, stating that the factory's opening marks a new chapter for local farmers by enhancing access to quality feed and technology. The facility's commissioning reflects the company's sustainability and localization strategy, aiming to empower local farmers by combining global expertise with local insights.

The Athi River plant is expected to create 280 direct jobs and is part of De Heus’ regional expansion strategy. The company recently commissioned an aquafeed factory in Uganda and launched operations at a second facility in Ivory Coast. Further expansion across East Africa is planned.

According to Wiehan Visagie, General Manager of De Heus Kenya, the new facility strengthens the company's ambition to be Kenya’s leading animal nutrition supplier. With 35 outlets nationwide, De Heus is dedicated to enhancing productivity and efficiency for its customers, thereby boosting the livestock industry's competitiveness in local markets.

Founded in 1911 and headquartered in Ede, Netherlands, De Heus operates feed mills in over 20 countries, supporting global livestock and aquaculture farmers with high-quality feed and advisory services. The commissioning of the Athi River plant underscores the company’s focus on nourishing future generations and confidence in Africa's livestock and dairy potential.
