Danone publishes its 2025 UK nutrient profile score
Danone has added its 2025 UK sales-weighted average Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM) score to the health and nutrition information it has voluntarily reported since 2023. The company recorded an average score of -0.09 across its UK portfolio.
The NPM underpins the UK government’s classification of foods high in fat, salt or sugar. Under the model, food products with a score of four or more, and drinks with a score of one or more, are defined as “less healthy”.
Unlike a simple average of product scores, a sales-weighted figure reflects both the nutritional rating of each item and its share of sales. Danone said this provides an indication of the nutritional profile of the portfolio as a whole.
The company said publishing the figure was consistent with its support for compulsory healthy-food-sales reporting by large food businesses. The British government has included such reporting in its 10-Year Health Plan for England, although the source did not give a timetable for its introduction.
Danone also backed plans announced earlier in the week by members of the Food & Drink Federation. Those companies intend to publish healthy food sales information based on the current NPM during 2027. Danone said more consistent reporting would enable businesses and other stakeholders to track changes in the nutritional composition of food sales over time.
Richard Hall, vice-president general secretary at Danone North Europe, said: “At Danone, we believe transparency is essential to improving public health. At a time when the UK faces significant health challenges, greater openness helps create accountability, build trust and provide a clearer understanding of the role food businesses can play in supporting healthier diets and influencing positive health outcomes.”
Hall said Danone had reported beyond mandatory requirements in the UK for many years. He described the voluntary disclosure of the sales-weighted NPM score as a further step in measuring and sharing progress on health. He added that the company was combining reporting with reformulation and product development, aimed at strengthening its portfolio and making healthier choices easier for consumers. Danone said it would continue those activities alongside nutrition reporting.
