Danone Expands Protein Market Presence with Australian Acquisition

Danone, the global food and beverage company, has taken a significant step in its growth strategy by acquiring the Australian company Made Group. The acquisition is reportedly valued at around 2 billion Australian dollars, although Danone has not officially confirmed the transaction amount. This move is part of Danone's broader strategy to expand its presence in the high-growth segment of protein-rich foods.

Made Group is known for its brands such as Rokeby Farms, which specializes in protein shakes and high-protein yogurts, as well as Cocobella coconut water and other wellness-oriented functional beverages. Danone's acquisition of Made Group aligns with its strategy to capitalize on the increasing global demand for functional foods and high-protein products.

Additionally, Danone has announced the purchase of the remaining 49% stake in its joint venture with Saputo Dairy Australia, thereby gaining full control of this operation. Both acquisitions are scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2026.

The acquisition not only strengthens Danone's presence in Australia and New Zealand but also facilitates the expansion of these product categories into Southeast Asia. Currently, Danone has a limited presence in this region, concentrated mainly in infant and medical nutrition. The company believes that the growing consumption of healthy foods and functional beverages presents a long-term opportunity in these markets.

Danone plans to integrate scientific innovation and technological development to enhance the acquired brands in both Oceania and Asia. Earlier this year, Danone also announced its acquisition of the British brand Huel, which focuses on meal replacements and functional nutrition. This deal is still pending regulatory approval.

These acquisitions highlight a significant trend in the global dairy industry, where there is a shift towards added value through proteins. Traditional milk consumption has seen moderate growth in several developed markets, whereas categories like protein yogurts, ready-to-drink shakes, functional beverages, and nutritional ingredients continue to grow at above-average industry rates.

With this strategic acquisition, Danone aims to further strengthen its position in one of the most innovative and investment-rich segments of the global dairy business.
