French multinational Danone has announced the relocation of part of its yogurt production from Spain to Romania, marking a significant expansion at its Bucharest facility. This move is aimed at meeting growing demand for protein-rich products, specifically with the production of YoPRO drinking yogurts.
"The local market segment for protein-rich products is expanding," noted Anca Miron, Head of Dairy Functionals for Danone Central and Eastern Europe.
Danone's Bucharest factory, now the most efficient in Europe, has a production capacity of 75,000 tons annually, supplying Romania and 14 other European countries. The YoPRO product line will be exported to markets in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia.
Danone acquired the Miorița dairy factory in Bucharest in 1996 and, following significant modernization efforts, began yogurt production in 1999. Today, Danone Romania processes over 60,000 tons of milk annually, sourced from 22 large farms and 220 smaller households.
