Dairy Product Contamination in Pune Leads to FDA Shutdown

The recent bacterial outbreak in Pune's Wadgaon Sheri neighborhood has been traced back to dairy products, resulting in severe health issues for multiple residents. Symptoms reported included vomiting, diarrhea, and intense nausea. Hospitalizations followed, with a nine-year-old child requiring emergency care in an intensive care unit before being stabilized.

In response to the outbreak, food safety officials have suspended the commercial operations of the affected retail storefront and issued a stop-work notice to Guru Nanak Dairy's manufacturing facility. A comprehensive inspection of the production lines has been carried out by regional authorities. Syed Imran Hashmi, Assistant Commissioner (Food) and Designated Officer for the FDA, confirmed that operations at the site are halted until chemical and microbiological tests are completed.

The Chandan Nagar police department is collaborating with the FDA in the investigation, collecting victim statements and sending patient vomit samples for forensic analysis. Law enforcement has indicated that their criminal investigation will be guided by the upcoming scientific reports from the FDA. Should the tests confirm contamination in the dairy products, the state regulator plans to take legal action under food safety laws, potentially bypassing standard corporate penalties.

Authorities remain vigilant as they await the laboratory findings, which will determine the next steps in addressing the contamination and ensuring public safety.
