Dairy Producers in Apaseo el Grande Seek New Markets
Milk producers and cheese processors in Apaseo el Grande, in the Celaya metropolitan area, have begun initiatives to expand their commercial reach. The municipality’s dairy sector is seeking to move beyond sales of fresh milk through local intermediaries and to develop more differentiated routes to market.
Family farms face narrow margins when they sell unprocessed milk at the farm gate. Producers cite rising expenses for forage, feed concentrates, electricity for pumping and refrigeration, as well as instability in the marketing of fresh raw material. Processing milk into products such as fresh cheese, asadero, panela, botanero and matured varieties would allow more value to remain within the farms and small workshops.
The producers and artisanal processors are also working to improve production methods for access to larger customers. Measures include stronger Good Livestock Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices, microbiological controls during collection and greater consistency in the physicochemical properties of curds.
These measures are intended to support compliance with health requirements for dairy products. The standards are relevant to potential sales through retail chains, restaurants and speciality food shops in nearby cities, where buyers may require documented controls and more consistent products.
The local sector is seeking support from municipal authorities and Guanajuato’s Secretariat for Agri-Food and Rural Development, known as SDAyR. The proposals include taking part in regional food and agriculture fairs, creating collective brands identifying cheeses from Apaseo el Grande, and establishing direct commercial links with markets in Querétaro, Celaya, León and Mexico City.
The initiative is based on the use of locally produced cow’s milk and on efforts to strengthen the commercial position of traditional dairy activity in the Bajío region. Producers are seeking to increase returns from their herds, formalise sales and develop outlets that can support employment and economic activity in their communities.
