Dairy-Beef Integration Project to Host Informational Event in Bandon
An innovative dairy-beef integration project will be showcased at an informational event on Thursday, January 23, at the Munster Arms Hotel in Bandon, Co. Cork. This initiative is a collaboration between Certified Irish Angus, ABP Food Group, and Bandon Co-op, aiming to enhance both dairy and beef farming sectors.
Project Overview The objective of the joint project is to produce Angus-cross calves with higher-than-average Commercial Beef Values (CBV’s), delivering added value to both dairy and beef farms. Initiated in Spring 2024, the breeding program seeks to improve the genetic beef merit of Angus calves born from dairy cows in the Bandon region.
A sel ect group of 20 dairy farmers fr om Bandon Co-op will be involved, using three high beef merit Angus bulls: Drumcrow Tribesman, HW Lord Horatio, and Coolrain Patriarch.
Event Focus The event will provide insights into the Advantage Beef Programme, concentrating on producing better calves and ensuring these animals reach their genetic potential through proper care. Topics will include improving genetics, animal health and transitions, and the Water European Innovation Partnership (EIP) programme.
Partnership and Goals Charles Smith of Certified Irish Angus and Stephen Connolly from ABP Food Group emphasize the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable and efficient dairy and beef production. Smith stated the project highlights Certified Irish Angus's commitment to better beef production, while Connolly praised the partnership with Bandon Co-op.
