Closure of Agropur's Dairy Plant in Sussex Raises Economic Concerns

Agropur, a major dairy cooperative, announced the closure of its Sussex, N.B. plant, which specializes in butter and powdered milk production, by the end of 2028. This decision is expected to lead to the loss of approximately 60 jobs in the area. The closure has raised concerns among local leaders about the economic impact on the community.

The New Brunswick government previously provided up to $2.4 million in non-repayable contributions to support Agropur's expansion in Miramichi, where the company is investing $20 million. This expansion is anticipated to create 15 skilled jobs, potentially offsetting some of the job losses in Sussex.

Premier Susan Holt stated that despite the closure in Sussex, the overall employment in New Brunswick will increase due to Agropur's growth in Miramichi. However, conflicting information has emerged regarding the availability of jobs for Sussex employees in Miramichi, leading to calls for more transparency from the government and Agropur.

Local officials, including Alan Brown, mayor of Butternut Valley, and Tammy Scott, MLA for Sussex-Three Rivers, expressed concerns about the broader economic implications of the closure, such as impacts on suppliers and related industries. Brown criticized the provincial government's funding strategy, suggesting it inadvertently supported the closure of the Sussex plant.

Requests for further comments from Agropur and government officials have not been answered, leaving many questions unresolved. Discussions between local leaders and provincial representatives are ongoing to address these concerns and clarify the future of Agropur's workforce in the region.
