Chobani's Major Investment to Amplify Michigan Dairy Production

Chobani has announced a substantial investment of more than $567 million aimed at expanding its production capacity for La Colombe milk lattes in West Michigan. This expansion is expected to boost the demand for raw milk in the region over twentyfold, reaching more than 615 million pounds. The decision to increase production was influenced by the strong supply of fresh milk and a dedicated workforce, according to Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya.

As part of the expansion initiative, over $64.5 million will be invested in Muskegon County's wastewater system to support the new facility in Norton Shores. This investment is seen as a significant step for the local economy. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasized that this increased demand will bring stability to the state's dairy farmers and strengthen the agricultural industry overall.

JP Koop of Lucky Seven Dairy in McBain expressed optimism about the opportunities this expansion will present. The project is expected to enable local dairy farms to expand operations without the added expense of transporting milk out of state. This development is welcomed by Michigan's agricultural leaders, including Tim Boring, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, who noted that such investments reflect a positive outlook on Michigan's agriculture sector.

In addition to the economic benefits, Chobani's commitment to social responsibility was highlighted during the event by packing a mobile food trailer with supplies for over 500 local families in collaboration with No Kid Hungry. This effort underscores Chobani's ongoing dedication to combating childhood hunger.
