Dairy farming, an essential livelihood in Chittoor district, has received a significant boost under the State government's Gokulam Sheds Scheme. This initiative focuses on providing structured infrastructure for livestock management to improve dairy output.

As Chittoor leads in milk production within the state, the scheme's implementation is critical. Officials report an average milk collection of 18 to 20 lakh litres daily in the district, with about 80% of farmers relying on dairy farming to stabilize their income. Recently, 2,173 cattle sheds have been sanctioned under the scheme, with 2,094 already established and 1,393 completed by March 31. These efforts aim to benefit predominantly SC and ST farmers owning at least five acres of land.

District Collector Sumit Kumar emphasized the importance of structured shelters in enhancing cattle health and increasing milk productivity. Meanwhile, local farmers have already observed considerable improvements; for instance, T Anjappa from Naniyala reported consistent milk production of 20 litres daily, and J Venkatesh Naidu noted better protection from weather extremes for his cattle, leading to improved yields.

The Gokulam Sheds Scheme stands as a strategic stepping stone towards long-term economic resilience in the region's dairy sector.
