Despite a slowdown in milk powder imports, China's dairy imports increased in early 2025, with significant growth in butter and cream purchases.

In the first two months of 2025, China saw a notable increase in dairy imports, despite scaling back on milk powder, both whole and skimmed.
The overall import surge was marked by a 7.6% increase, fueled by a 72% rise in butter purchases and a 12.7% increase in cream imports.
New Zealand and France were the major beneficiaries of these increased purchases.
Cheese imports also played a significant role, seeing a substantial 14.5% rise with New Zealand and Australia dominating as suppliers, accounting for 80% of the imports. While the European Union experienced a decline of 16.5%, Italy, within the EU, saw a remarkable 38.7% increase in cheese exports to China.
