Calmo Farms Unveils Advanced GEA T8900 Rotary Dairy System

Calmo Farms has introduced Australia's second GEA T8900 rotary dairy, a significant milestone in their five-year modernization strategy. This state-of-the-art facility enables a team of 40 workers to milk approximately 800 cows per hour, enhancing the farm's operational efficiency significantly.

Jade and Belinda Clymo, the owners of Calmo Farms, showcased the new 120-unit rotary dairy parlor during a public open day in June, which attracted over 400 visitors, far exceeding their expectations. This installation is part of an ambitious expansion plan for the family business, which began 53 years ago with just 120 cows.

The new facility spans 4,300 square meters and includes a holding yard that can accommodate 750 cows at a time. According to GEA National Sales Manager Jurgen Steen, this is the largest rotary system available globally, capable of managing herds of 2,000 to 8,000 cows.

The dairy's infrastructure includes advanced components such as seven high-volume milk filters and a large industrial electrical switchboard, which required a $300,000 investment. These installations are part of a larger, multi-million-dollar upgrade that connects to existing dairy housing barns built over the last five years.

The Clymos began planning this expansion five years ago, researching dairy operations in the United States and consulting with international experts. Construction commenced 18 months ago, with significant challenges overcome, including stringent fire compliance regulations.

Alongside the physical upgrades, Calmo Farms has transitioned its herd management practices. The farm shifted from traditional in-bale feeding to a Total Mixed Ration (TMR) dietary program within specialized barns. With construction complete, active milking on the new platform began in late June, setting the stage for increased productivity.
