Burford named Supreme Champion at British & Irish Cheese Awards 2025

In the 29th edition of the British & Irish Cheese Awards, held near Shepton Mallet in Somerset, UK, Burford, produced by King Stone Dairy, rose to prominence as the Supreme Champion. This achievement highlights the skill and dedication of farmhouse cheesemaker David Jowett, who crafted Burford to reflect the seasonal pastures at Manor Farm Chedworth using a single herd's organic cow's milk. The cheese is noted for its complex flavors, including charcuterie, hazelnut, and tropical fruit tones.

David Jowett expressed delight at the recognition, noting that Burford's success is due to the combined efforts in milk production and the cheesemaking process at King Stone Dairy. The British & Irish Cheese Awards, judged by 52 industry experts, evaluated nearly 600 entries and emphasized the high standards of UK and Ireland cheesemakers. The Reserve Champion title went to the Golden Cross Cheese Company's goat’s milk cheese.

Julius Longman, the Awards' chairman, commended the exceptional qualities presented, noting the intense deliberation needed to select the winners. The event, organized by The Royal Bath & West Society, served not only as a competition but also a public festival, inviting attendees to engage with the art of cheesemaking and even participate in a guided cheese tour.
