Brittany Ferries to Exit Irish Calf Export Trade by 2027

The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) has called for immediate clarity on the decision by Brittany Ferries to cease its live calf transport services between Ireland and continental Europe. The ferry operator is set to withdraw its services before the spring 2027 calving season, although no specific final sailing date has been announced.

Brittany Ferries is currently one of only two operators providing this essential service, which saw over 200,000 calves exported from Ireland in 2026. The cessation of their service poses logistical challenges for Irish exporters, who rely on this route to stabilize livestock prices and manage seasonal supply surges.

ICSA President Sean McNamara expressed concerns regarding the commercial impact on primary producers. He emphasized that live exports are crucial for maintaining price competition for Irish cattle. McNamara warned that a reduction in shipping capacity could disrupt the spring calf trade, leaving fewer buyers for both dairy and beef producers.

The ICSA is urging the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) along with maritime logistics stakeholders to devise alternative shipping routes. McNamara stressed the need for coordinated policy and infrastructure planning to ensure the private sector can absorb the displaced transport volume.

This development highlights broader vulnerabilities in the supply chain for Ireland’s livestock sector, especially in light of evolving European maritime regulations and welfare scrutiny. Farm organizations underline the necessity of securing cost-effective and high-capacity shipping alternatives to maintain access to key European markets and ensure the long-term viability of farms.
