Brazilian Dairy Industry Seeks New Markets Amid US Tariff Threat

The United States has announced a proposal to implement a 25% tariff on Brazilian products under Section 301, a mechanism used to impose tariffs during trade disputes. This move has prompted reactions from various sectors in Brazil, particularly the dairy industry, which is now looking to expand its presence in international markets.

In response to the potential trade barriers, the Aliança Láctea Sul Brasileira (ALSB) is advancing an agenda to increase the export of Brazilian dairy products. Stakeholders from the southern states and Mato Grosso do Sul gathered in Florianópolis to discuss strategies for improving competitiveness, accessing new markets, and enhancing herd health standards, particularly concerning brucellosis and tuberculosis.

Ronei Volpi, the general coordinator of ALSB, emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on the uncertain domestic market by finding new international buyers. The southern region of Brazil accounts for 41.1% of the country's industrialized milk production, producing more than the local consumption demands, thus necessitating the search for external markets.

The meeting also included updates on the Programa de Incentivo à Exportação de Leite, which aims to support dairy projects targeting exports. Products like powdered milk, cheese, butter, and anhydrous fat are highlighted as key focus areas. Airton Spies, a consultant for ALSB, noted that increased competitiveness could help the sector better withstand international competition and price fluctuations.

Discussions also touched on internal protection measures and opportunities for value addition. Vânia Oliveira Franco, Santa Catarina's Secretary of State for National Articulation, discussed initiatives such as the Programa Leite Bom SC and a decree suspending fiscal incentives for imported dairy goods in Santa Catarina.

The ALSB is also exploring economic opportunities in whey utilization and high-value dairy proteins, such as whey protein. Additionally, the meeting addressed anti-dumping processes related to imported powdered milk and risk management tools for the market.

This focus on export and value addition is seen as a strategy to turn the challenges posed by US trade pressures into opportunities, allowing the Brazilian dairy sector to secure a stronger position in the global market.
