Brazil’s spot milk market weakened further in the first half of August. Across the states surveyed, the average price fell 2.9% from the preceding fortnight, equivalent to a reduction of R$0.09 per litre. Compared with a month earlier, the decline was 3.6%, or R$0.11 per litre.

The downward movement has continued for several weeks, with the latest data showing a faster adjustment. The principal factor identified was higher milk collection in southern Brazil, a region that, together with Minas Gerais, accounts for a large share of national production. Greater availability for dairy processors coincided with weak final demand, putting pressure on prices negotiated between plants.

Spot quotations decreased in every Brazilian region at the start of August. São Paulo recorded the highest average price, followed by Minas Gerais and Goiás. Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul posted the largest adjustments during the period.

The supply picture has also been affected by the balance between production and household consumption. A rise in Brazilian household dairy consumption has been projected for 2026, but the market’s ability to absorb additional output depends on household incomes. With less room for consumption to expand, increased dairy availability has been associated with larger industrial inventories and lower prices. Imports have declined compared with 2024 but remain part of the country’s overall supply balance.

Spot transactions and producer reference prices are separate measures. Spot milk is traded between processors on a cash basis and is considered more volatile. The prices published by state Conseleite bodies for payments to farmers generally respond more slowly to changes in supply and demand.

This difference was visible in Rio Grande do Sul. In July, the state’s Conseleite had projected a 2.98% increase in the price paid to producers, after a period of relative stability in the first half of the year. The spot market can move before consolidated reference prices, which may later reflect those changes with a delay or may not do so.

Market participants are monitoring whether milk collection in the South continues to grow or begins to slow as the seasonal off-season approaches. Demand conditions are also linked to household debt levels and the still-high Selic interest rate. Imports of milk powder and cheese compete with domestic production in those segments.
