Brazil’s Dairy Market Divides as Consumption Declines

Brazil’s dairy market recorded lower sales in the first seven months of 2026 than in the same period of 2025. Real revenue fell by 4.6%, while physical volume declined by 3.8%. The implied average price was broadly stable, decreasing by 0.9%.

The market was measured against an economic backdrop of slower growth, high interest rates and inflation affecting household budgets. The 2026 calendar also includes the football World Cup and elections. The analysis describes consumers as becoming more selective in their spending, rather than reducing purchases across every dairy segment.

Of the 19 categories examined, four increased in volume. Cheese rose by 4.6%, condensed milk by 2.9%, milk powder by 1.6% and yoghurt by 0.9%. Long-life milk, which represents more than half of the country’s marketed dairy volume, fell by 5.7%. Fermented milk declined by 7.2%, while pasteurised milk recorded the largest fall among the categories, at 13.3%.

A breakdown into 84 subcategories showed stronger changes within individual product types. Greek lactose-free yoghurt increased by 54.5% in volume, and its family-size version grew by 40.4%. Protein dairy drinks rose by 36%, while light cream cheese increased by 26.2%.

Some gains were recorded in products and formats associated with lower spending. Full-fat condensed milk grew by 53%, and skimmed milk powder by 27.5%. Mozzarella and prato cheese sold as whole pieces increased by 26.4%, while sliced versions of the same cheeses lost ground. Family-size dairy drinks also gained volume relative to individual packs.

The largest declines included semi-skimmed milk powder, down 47.7%, special ice creams, down 38.6%, and petit yoghurt in pouches, down 28.3%. Individual functional yoghurts fell by 27.8%, fermented lactose-free yoghurt by 25.7%, and culinary cream similar to crème fraîche by 24.9%. Individual layered yoghurt with fruit pieces declined by 24.8%, Emmental and Gruyère cheeses by 22.5%, and fruit-pulp yoghurt by 20.7%.

Comparisons of volume and real-price changes between January and July showed that some categories expanded despite higher prices, while others contracted even when prices were stable or falling. The data therefore showed different volume responses across categories. The analysis identified shifts from individual to family formats, from sliced cheese to whole pieces, and from conventional products to lactose-free or protein products, depending on the specific subcategory.
