Brazil Initiates Public Procurement of Powdered Milk Amid Dairy Crisis

The Brazilian government has launched a public procurement initiative for powdered milk, marking a significant intervention in the dairy sector. With R$ 100 million allocated, the National Supply Company (Conab) will oversee the purchase and distribution of powdered milk to support both producers and social entities.

This initiative, announced through a decree in the Diário Oficial da União, enables resource reallocation to initiate purchases. Conab's role involves acquiring powdered milk directly and donating it to qualifying entities, addressing both food security and the ongoing crisis in the dairy industry.

Edegar Pretto, president of Conab, confirmed the start of these purchases, with further financial support potentially forthcoming from the federal government. This first phase involves resources reallocated from public stock formation budgets, managed by the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family, and Fight Against Hunger.

The initiative connects two strategic agendas: ensuring food security and responding to urgent demands from dairy producers affected by the crisis. Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture may release another R$ 100 million, hinting at a broader rollout of this program.

This governmental action signals a direct market intervention, utilizing public procurement as an emergency tool to bolster the dairy industry and support food distribution programs.
