Brazil Emerges as Second Largest Milk Producer Globally

Brazil has established itself as a leading player in the global dairy industry, now ranked as the second-largest milk producer worldwide. The country's annual production has reached approximately 33 billion liters, trailing only India in terms of herd size and standing third globally in production volume.

This achievement reflects a significant transformation within Brazil's dairy sector. After a decade of stability from 2014 to 2024, the industry has experienced a resurgence, marked by record growth driven by advancements in productivity and the adoption of new technologies. Roberto Young, a prominent dairy producer, noted that expansion rates have returned to levels not seen since the 1970s, with production increasing by 7% to 8% annually.

Despite a reduction in the number of dairy producers, approximately 200,000 have left the field over the past ten years, the sector continues to thrive. This shift is part of a broader trend toward professionalization and scaling up of operations, a pattern observed internationally. The focus has shifted from farm size to efficiency, with smaller farms achieving productivity levels between 40,000 to 50,000 liters of milk per hectare annually.

The current landscape contrasts with previous decades, where price controls up to the 1990s hindered development. Today, increased market freedom fosters investment opportunities and growth, providing a stable environment for farms aiming to boost productivity.

Currently, Brazil boasts around 300,000 dairy producers, a decline from previous decades. However, these producers now operate with a higher level of professionalism. Technical qualifications have become increasingly important, with programs such as those offered by the CNA/Senar system providing training in areas like animal nutrition and management to enhance productivity and farm management.

The result is a dairy industry that not only expands its output but also evolves its production profile. Brazilian milk production is increasingly driven by efficiency, technology, and professional development, securing the country's position among the world's top producers.
