Bill Gates has revealed a new favorite food that aligns with his passion for sustainable solutions: fungi-based yogurt. The billionaire Microsoft co-founder and climate advocate shared his enthusiasm for the dairy alternative in a recent post on Threads, describing it as not only environmentally friendly but also superior in taste and performance.

A Game-Changer for the Dairy Alternatives Market
Gates highlighted fungi-based yogurt, likely referencing Nature’s Fynd’s Fy Yogurt, which uses Dairy-Free Fy Milk made from a unique fungi strain discovered in Yellowstone National Park. Available in Strawberry, Peach, and Vanilla, the yogurt is noted for its minimal resource requirements—such as water, land, and energy—making it one of the most sustainable food options available.

“While the meat replacement market is already robust, sustainable dairy protein alternatives are improving daily,” Gates wrote. “I now prefer a fungi-based yogurt over the ‘real’ stuff.”

Nature’s Fynd responded to Gates’ comments with optimism. “Seeing as though we’re the only fungi-based yogurt on the market, we’re hoping he’s talking about our Dairy-Free Fy Yogurt available at Whole Foods Markets,” the company wrote on Threads.

Environmental Impact of Fungi-Based Foods
Fungi-based foods are celebrated for their low environmental impact. Unlike animal agriculture, which accounts for 80% of agricultural land use despite providing only 17% of global calorie intake, fungi require significantly fewer resources. Dairy farming, a leading contributor to deforestation and methane emissions, underscores the urgency of sustainable alternatives.

A single cow can produce 220 pounds of methane annually—a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. In contrast, fungi fermentation technology offers a scalable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional dairy farming.

Gates’ Investment in Climate Solutions
Gates is not only a consumer but also a financial backer of Nature’s Fynd. In 2022, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the company $4.67 million to extend its fungi fermentation technology to farming communities in low- and middle-income countries.

“Access to protein is a major challenge globally, and this grant allows us to develop technology that could impact millions,” said Thomas Jonas, CEO of Nature’s Fynd.

Beyond Nature’s Fynd, Gates has supported other plant-based innovators like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. He has consistently championed the role of sustainable food in combating climate change, even advocating for wealthier nations to phase out beef consumption entirely.

Climate Innovations for 2025 and Beyond
Gates framed fungi-based yogurt as part of a broader movement toward climate-conscious innovations, which he predicts will become mainstream in 2025. He cited advancements such as vacuum-insulated windows, improved EV batteries, and carbon capture technology, emphasizing that these solutions are not only environmentally vital but also economically advantageous.

“Climate solutions are market solutions,” Gates wrote. “Corporations that invest in them aren’t just future-proofing; they’re future-seizing.”
