Belarus has expressed strong interest in tapping into the expertise and innovations of Italian dairy manufacturers, particularly in the areas of cheese production and advanced dairy processing techniques.
As Belarus continues to grow its dairy industry—marked by rising milk production and expanding opportunities for both export and domestic sales—enhancing product quality and competitiveness has become a top priority. This ambition was highlighted by Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, during the Belarusian-Italian round table on dairy production technologies held from 10-13 September at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The round table marks a continuation of collaborative efforts between the two nations, following the first Belarusian-Italian meeting in February 2024, which focused on livestock breeding. "Bilateral cooperation remains active by mutual agreement, demonstrating that both sides see value in these exchanges," Gusakov stated.
Gusakov emphasized that, while Belarusian dairy products are praised for their high quality, the country should not become complacent. Italy’s renowned expertise in cheesemaking and dairy technology could provide valuable insights for Belarus to further improve its product offerings. “We are deeply interested in Italy’s latest technologies, particularly in the application of microorganisms and production techniques to enhance product quality. While we recognize that each country guards its own interests, we hope to learn some of the valuable secrets of Italian dairy production,” Gusakov said.
Strengthening Bilateral Collaboration
The recent round table is not just a theoretical exercise. The program includes visits to various organizations within the Department of Agricultural Sciences of Belarus and domestic enterprises involved in baby food production. The event serves as a practical platform for knowledge exchange, with participation from not only scientists but also executives from Belarus’ largest dairy processing enterprises. These business leaders aim to understand the technological advancements of their Italian counterparts and identify solutions to local challenges through dialogue and cooperation.
One of the highlights of the event is the expected signing of a communiqué on further scientific and technical collaboration between Belarus and Italy. This agreement will solidify ongoing cooperation and outline future joint activities aimed at improving dairy processing technologies in both countries.
Addressing Key Challenges in the Dairy Industry
Belarusian scientists and industry leaders are tasked with developing new dairy products, enhancing the competitiveness of existing offerings, and addressing specific consumer needs, including those of individuals with dietary restrictions, athletes, and children. To achieve these goals, the Belarusian dairy sector is looking to Italy’s rich experience in niche dairy production and advanced processing technologies.
Gusakov expressed optimism about the future of this partnership. "Cooperation is progressing positively, and the mutual interest from both sides suggests the potential for sustainable development," he said.
This ongoing collaboration between Belarus and Italy underscores Belarus’ determination to remain competitive in the global dairy market by leveraging international expertise to refine its product quality and meet evolving consumer demands.
