Arla Foods Invests in Quark Production Amid Rising Demand

Arla Foods, a prominent player in the dairy industry, is currently experiencing a significant surge in demand for its quark product in Sweden. Quark, a high-protein cultured dairy product, has seen a 30% increase in sales as more Swedish households incorporate it into their diets. This rise in consumption is largely attributed to evolving consumer health trends and the growing use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, which require a higher protein intake to maintain muscle mass.

Despite operating at full capacity, Arla is struggling to meet the heightened demand, leading to frequent retail stockouts. To address this supply bottleneck, the company has announced a substantial capital investment of 450 million SEK aimed at expanding its manufacturing infrastructure for both quark and cottage cheese across its regional plants.

Industry data highlights a broader trend of increasing demand for high-protein dairy products, with the category expanding at double-digit rates over the past decade. Approximately 40% of Swedish households now regularly purchase quark, reflecting its growing popularity and necessitating increased production efforts from regional competitors such as Skånemejerier.

The Linköping processing facility, a key site for Arla, has acknowledged the challenges posed by the current demand levels, with retail orders outstripping the available production capacity. This situation underscores the need for strategic investments in specialized processing infrastructure to keep pace with consumer demand.

Arla executives have noted that the current consumer trend towards high-protein products is the most significant they have witnessed in the food sector. As these products deliver better margins, Arla is likely to continue prioritizing investments in processing capabilities to support this growing market across Northern Europe.
