Arla's Controversial Closure of Settle Creamery Amidst Union Dissent

Arla has affirmed its decision to proceed with the closure of its Settle creamery, despite widespread opposition and the presentation of alternatives by the GMB Union and stakeholders. This closure, tied to Arla's investment in its Lockerbie facilities, will result in the loss of 130 skilled jobs, impacting the wider rural community.
Despite suggestions ranging from a shift to a greenfield location to shared facility production, Arla opted to relocate production to Lockerbie. Deanne Ferguson from the GMB Union expressed disappointment and announced plans to ballot members for potential strike action. The union remains committed to fighting for the jobs at Settle, urging Arla to maintain open dialogue for further negotiations.
The creamery's closure is part of Arla's broader strategy to consolidate its operations and strengthen its manufacturing network in the UK, particularly focusing on its facilities in Scotland. A spokesperson for Arla emphasized the company's commitment to remain a major employer in the Yorkshire region.
