Arla Introduces Free Milk ATM in North London to Tackle Fresh Dairy Shortage at UK Food Charities

Arla has launched the UK’s first free milk ATM in North London, aiming to spotlight the growing need for fresh dairy at food charities. The initiative highlights an important issue: one in five food charities supported by FareShare cannot provide fresh dairy due to inadequate refrigeration facilities, forcing many to decline donations of milk, yogurt, and other perishable items.
FareShare, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, has noted a significant demand for dairy products from its partner charities. "Our charities report that the demand for nutritious dairy products is increasing, but many lack the infrastructure to store refrigerated items safely," said Ben Ashmore, head of external affairs at FareShare. "Thanks to Arla’s generous commitment to donating fridges to charities across the UK, many of these organizations can now offer a more varied range of nutritious food."
The milk ATM is part of Arla’s broader effort to support food charities in meeting the rising demand for dairy. Arla’s recent survey of 2,000 UK adults found that half of the respondents couldn’t imagine a day without milk, yet 62% were unaware that many food banks lack the refrigeration needed to store fresh dairy. Additionally, 65% of respondents believe there is limited understanding of dairy’s health benefits, and 52% say they would increase their dairy intake if they were more informed about its nutritional value.
While most people recognize dairy as a source of calcium (75%) and a contributor to bone strength (60%), fewer are aware of its other benefits, such as reducing fatigue (20%). Arla’s initiative seeks to not only improve access to dairy products but also to raise awareness about their nutritional value, which remains underrepresented in discussions around dietary needs.
Through partnerships with food charities like FareShare, Arla is addressing this gap in access to dairy by providing fridges that enable charities to store fresh milk and other dairy products safely. This investment underscores Arla’s commitment to promoting nutrition and supporting those in need, ensuring more people across the UK have daily access to fresh dairy products.
