Arla Foods Ingredients has inked a pivotal agreement to take over Volac’s Whey Nutrition business, marking a significant move in the nutrition industry.

Based in the UK, the Volac group specializes in converting whey into high-quality ingredients for sports nutrition, with additional by-products utilized in food and animal nutrition. Central to its operations is the whey processing facility located in Felinfach, Wales.
Today, Arla Foods Ingredients announced the signing of an acquisition agreement to purchase the Whey Nutrition division of Volac’s business. This transaction includes acquiring shares in Volac Whey Nutrition Holdings Limited and its subsidiaries, Volac Whey Nutrition Limited, and Volac Renewable Energy Limited. Pending regulatory approvals, the deal is slated for completion later this year.
The acquisition is poised to play a pivotal role in Arla Foods Ingredients’ future strategies, with plans to position the Felinfach site as a global production hub and bolster its product offerings in the performance, health, and food sectors.
For Volac, this strategic move represents a natural progression in its evolution as a family-owned enterprise. It also sets the stage for optimal growth and development of the Whey Nutrition Business alongside Volac’s remaining Animal Nutrition Business.
Luis Cubel, Group Vice President and Managing Director of Arla Foods Ingredients, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This brings together two complementary offerings in a growing and increasingly international space for whey products. Volac is a pioneer in the use of whey protein for performance nutrition and has a wealth of expertise as well as an incredibly talented team. It shares our commitment to helping companies worldwide harness the full potential of whey, and we’re hugely excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.”
James Neville, joint owner of Volac, on behalf of the Neville family, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of selecting a partner with the right values and expertise to propel Volac Whey Nutrition to new heights. Neville noted, “Arla Foods Ingredients has the ambition and the knowledge to take the business to the next level.”
The global sports nutrition industry has experienced robust growth, with projections indicating further expansion. Volac Whey Nutrition’s product portfolio includes the esteemed Volactive® range, while Arla Foods Ingredients boasts the Lacprodan® range, catering to various sports nutrition applications such as RTDs, powder shakes, and protein bars.
