Arla Foods Achieves 100% Renewable Electricity Usage in European Dairies

At the end of 2025, Arla Foods completed a significant milestone in sustainable energy usage across its European operations. The cooperative announced that all of its European dairies are now powered by electricity from renewable sources, marking a major step in its sustainability journey.

Arla's shift to 100% renewable electricity applies to 93% of its total electricity consumption, distributed across 46 production plants in seven different European countries. This transition has been achieved through a combination of open market-based certificates and long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The PPAs, which are contracts for the supply of electricity over several years at fixed prices, have been particularly instrumental in securing electricity from wind and solar energy sources.

David Boulanger, group director of supply chain at Arla Foods, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "This is a great achievement for our cooperative and the result of many years of hard work and dedication from the teams involved." He noted that the long-term agreements linked to concrete projects are helping to create additional access to renewable electricity in the EU and the UK.

By committing to purchase renewable energy over an extended period, Arla Foods is actively contributing to the green transition in Europe, an area that is often influenced by changing political support. This strategic move not only aligns with Arla's sustainability goals but also reflects a broader trend in the dairy industry towards more environmentally friendly practices.
