Argentinian Milk Production Stabilizes Amid Rising Export Demand
In April, Argentina's milk production grew by 0.5% compared to the same period last year, marking a halt in the previous downward trend. This modest increase contrasts with more robust production growth in other major global exporters. For instance, the United States increased its milk production by 2.7%, Australia by 4.1%, and New Zealand maintained strong performance. In Europe, production rose by 4.0% in March.
Despite the limited growth in production, Argentina's dairy exports experienced a significant boost. In March, exports of dairy products increased by 36% year-on-year. This surge was largely driven by whole milk powder exports, which rose by 63%, and skimmed milk powder, which increased by 28%.
The discrepancy between stable production and booming exports highlights the ongoing importance of international demand in absorbing Argentina's dairy output. The global market remains competitive, with growing production among key exporters intensifying competition for buyers.
The NZX report notes that while global milk production is expanding in line with market expectations, it has not yet resulted in a substantial oversupply. However, the increased output from leading exporters is heightening the competition in international markets.
For Argentina, the stabilization of milk production is a positive step, but it has not yet achieved the growth pace seen in other major dairy-exporting nations. The challenge ahead lies in transforming this initial stabilization into sustained growth. For now, the data indicates a change in direction, albeit without a fully consolidated recovery.
