Amul has raised retail prices for selected butter and ghee packs ahead of Diwali, as demand for branded dairy products increases. The revisions coincide with reported shortages in several markets; Amul has attributed the price changes to higher milk production costs.
Amul raises butter and ghee prices by ₹3–₹50 ahead of Diwali

Revised maximum retail prices published by The Economic Times put Amul’s 1-kg ghee carton at ₹680, up from ₹630. The ₹50 rise is the largest absolute increase among the four packs listed. A 500-g pure-ghee pouch now costs ₹345, compared with ₹325 previously, an increase of ₹20.

For table butter, the price of a 100-g pack has moved to ₹66 from ₹63, while the 500-g pack has risen to ₹325 from ₹310. These represent increases of ₹3 and ₹15 respectively. In a separate report covering table butter, ghee and cow ghee, the revised rates were reported to take effect on October 2, 2026.

The run-up to Diwali brings increased purchases of ghee by households and food businesses preparing sweets and traditional dishes. A cooperative leader associated with Amul said the festive period typically accounts for nearly 45% of yearly ghee consumption, increasing requirements for processing, distribution and stocks at retailers.

Reports also linked stronger demand for established ghee brands to enforcement against adulterated dairy products in Gujarat and neighbouring Rajasthan. According to the cooperative leader, approximately 200,000 kg of counterfeit ghee had been seized in the two states during the preceding six months. The enforcement activity reportedly prompted some buyers to turn to branded products, alongside the seasonal increase in consumption.

Retailers in Ahmedabad and Vadodara reported restricted availability of some Amul products, with cow ghee particularly affected. Reports of supply concerns also covered Pune and Kolkata. These accounts came as purchases of branded dairy products were increasing before the festival.

The increases follow a reduction in goods and services tax in September 2025, when the rate applicable to these dairy products fell to 5% from 12%. Amul subsequently announced lower prices for about 700 dairy products. Its explanation for the latest revision cited the increased cost of producing milk.

Following the 2025 tax change, Amul reduced the price of its one-litre ghee carton to ₹610 from ₹650, and its five-litre tin to ₹3,075 from ₹3,275. At that time, a 100-g butter pack became ₹58, down from ₹62, while the 500-g pack fell to ₹285 from ₹305.
