AMPI Dairy Workers Strike Over Unfair Labor Practices and Wage Disputes
Teamsters Local 471 members at the Associated Milk Producers Incorporated (AMPI) Dairy in Paynesville, Minnesota, have embarked on a strike, citing unfair labor practices. The strike follows nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations with AMPI regarding wages, healthcare, and job security. The dairy facility plays a significant role in cheese distribution across the Midwest.
According to Lyndon Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer and Principal Officer of Local 471, AMPI has not presented a fair proposal, leading members to demand better compensation and protections. The workers have been without a wage increase for over a year, with AMPI's offers failing to address the rising cost of living.
Healthcare coverage and job security remain contentious points, with AMPI rejecting proposals for more flexible health benefits and employment protections. Workers seek guarantees that their jobs and union contracts will remain intact in the event of a facility sale or change of ownership.
Heidi Barg, an 18-year lab technician at AMPI, highlighted the shift in workplace perception, stating that the facility was once a place to build careers but is now seen merely as a job. The workers' demands focus on fair compensation and respect for their dedication and hard work.
Teamsters Local 471 represents various workers in Minnesota, including those in dairy processing, warehousing, and distribution. The strike underscores ongoing labor challenges within the dairy industry.
