Experts underline the importance of aligning policies and strategies to ensure sustainability in Colombia's dairy industry. Emphasis is placed on formalizing processes, enhancing internal consumption, and capitalizing on export potential.
Alliance Between Industry and State: Key to Colombia's Dairy Sector
The Colombian dairy sector is consolidating its position as a major global producer, with an annual output exceeding 7.7 billion liters. This production supports a dairy market valued at 24.9 trillion pesos, approximately USD 6.116 billion, supported by around 320,000 small-scale producing families. However, only 43% of this production reaches the formal industry. Key strategies include the Payment System Per Liter of Milk (SPLL) to enhance quality and productivity. Despite an internal consumption below the recommended FAO levels, strong growth in exports to over 12,000 tons in 2024, particularly to Venezuela, presents new opportunities. Coordinated efforts among industry, the state, and producers are vital for fostering formalization, increasing domestic consumption, and leveraging export dynamics.
