Aavin cleared 300 tonnes of accumulated waste at Madurai plant

Aavin’s Madurai division conducted the cleanup on a 40-acre vacant area directly behind the dairy plant. Waste had accumulated there over several years, including discarded paper materials, packaging and other debris.

About 40 workers took part in the five-day drive, supported by two JCB excavators. A senior official said the material was loaded and taken away in roughly 150 truckloads from the cooperative’s premises.

The cleared refuse was classified as non-industrial and non-hazardous. It included old paper records, soiled paper sacks, cardboard cartons, paper cups, dry leaves and construction debris, rather than chemical waste or industrial by-products.

Each truckload was sent to the authorised municipal dumping site at Vellakal, near Madurai. The plant employs more than 200 people, and the unused rear section had become difficult to access because of accumulated debris, decaying paper and moisture-related odours.

R. Lenin, secretary of the CITU-Tamil Nadu Cooperative Department Employees Union in Madurai, said trade unions had submitted complaints about the waste piles for almost ten years. The removal has made the rear area accessible again and addressed the site’s sanitation and hygiene issues.
