Aavin: A Leading State-Run Dairy Cooperative

Aavin, based in Chennai, India, is a pivotal entity in the dairy industry of Tamil Nadu. As the largest dairy cooperative in the region, Aavin ensures a steady supply of dairy products, distributing millions of milk sachets daily to its consumers.

Financial Indicators

Over the recent years, Aavin has encountered significant financial challenges, with losses exceeding ₹2,000 crore. A major factor contributing to these difficulties has been a reduction in milk prices, alongside a lack of direct fiscal support. Specifically, a ₹3 per litre decrease in retail prices has resulted in an annual loss of nearly ₹550 crore. In response to these financial strains, Aavin has secured a bank loan aimed at providing incentives to its producers.

To meet the increasing demand for milk in Chennai, Aavin has announced plans to develop two new large processing plants. This expansion is expected to double the current milk supply capacity and enhance the regional dairy infrastructure. Additionally, Aavin remains committed to its Green Magic milk line to maintain supply adequacy.

In a move responsive to consumer preferences and regulatory standards, Aavin has adjusted its plain lassi product by reducing the sugar content from 17% to 10%, following extensive market research and feedback. This adjustment complies with the Bureau of Indian Standards' regulation capping sugar content in retail lassi at 12%.

Aavin is focused on strengthening its market presence by improving its production and supply capabilities, with the establishment of two new dairies in Chennai as a strategic initiative. The severe drought and heatwave in Tamil Nadu have notably impacted milk supply, affecting teashops, hotels, and caterers, with daily procurement reportedly dropping to 25 lakh litres. This situation has led to calls for government action to stabilize production.

Furthermore, Aavin is proposing a new regulatory framework to expand operating conditions for retailers from 20 rules to 56 provisions, covering aspects such as depot spacing, spoilage, handling duties, and property disclosures.

Management and Operations

In Coimbatore, Aavin has faced delays in milk deliveries, managed locally by the Coimbatore District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union. Increased demand has been reported following price hikes by private milk companies, with multi-brand agents increasing their daily Aavin orders by 10,000 to 15,000 litres.

Aavin has also reintroduced an automated milk vending machine service, featuring inventory monitoring, digital metering to detect tampering, automated sanitation procedures, and centralized monitoring capabilities.

The Tamil Nadu government is currently considering increasing the procurement price paid by Aavin from ₹41 to ₹44 per litre, as part of ongoing discussions regarding the cooperative's procurement price policy. Additionally, Aavin has removed over 300 tonnes of legacy waste from land behind its milk-processing facility on Sivagangai Road in Madurai, further demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Tamil Nadu's government has approved an additional ₹3 per litre for raw milk purchased from cooperative farmers supplying Aavin, reinforcing its support for the state-backed dairy network.
