Aavin: A Leading State-Run Dairy Cooperative

Aavin, headquartered in Chennai, India, stands as the largest dairy cooperative in Tamil Nadu. This organization plays an essential role in sustaining the region's dairy supply, distributing millions of milk sachets daily to its consumers.

Financial Indicators

Aavin has encountered significant financial challenges in recent years, with losses surpassing ₹2,000 crore. These difficulties are mainly due to a reduction in milk prices and the lack of direct fiscal support. Specifically, a retail price reduction of ₹3 per litre has resulted in an annual loss of nearly ₹550 crore. To alleviate these financial pressures, Aavin has obtained a bank loan to provide incentives to its producers.

To meet the rising demand for milk in Chennai, Aavin has announced plans to develop two new large processing plants. This expansion is designed to double the current milk supply capacity and improve the regional dairy infrastructure. Additionally, the company is committed to maintaining supply adequacy through its Green Magic milk line.

In alignment with consumer preferences and regulatory standards, Aavin has modified its plain lassi product by reducing the sugar content from 17% to 10%, complying with the Bureau of Indian Standards' cap of 12% sugar content in retail lassi.

Company Plans

Aavin is focused on strengthening its market presence by enhancing production and supply capabilities with the new dairies in Chennai. The severe drought and heatwave in Tamil Nadu have affected milk supply, impacting teashops, hotels, and caterers, with daily procurement dropping to 25 lakh litres. This situation has prompted calls for government intervention to stabilize production.

Further, Aavin is proposing a new regulatory framework to expand operating conditions for retailers, increasing the number of provisions from 20 to 56, covering depot spacing, spoilage, handling duties, and property disclosures.

Management and Operations

In Coimbatore, Aavin has faced delays in milk deliveries, managed locally by the Coimbatore District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union. Following price hikes by private milk companies, there has been an increased demand, with multi-brand agents raising their daily Aavin orders by 10,000 to 15,000 litres.

Aavin has also reintroduced an automated milk vending machine service, which includes inventory monitoring, digital metering to detect tampering, automated sanitation procedures, and centralized monitoring capabilities.

The Tamil Nadu government is considering increasing the procurement price paid by Aavin from ₹41 to ₹44 per litre. Additionally, Aavin has addressed environmental concerns by removing over 300 tonnes of legacy waste from land behind its milk-processing facility on Sivagangai Road in Madurai. The state government has also approved an additional ₹3 per litre for raw milk purchased from cooperative farmers supplying Aavin, reinforcing its support for the state-backed dairy network.

Aavin supplies 1.45 million litres of milk daily in Chennai, but demand requires 3 million litres, resulting in products selling out quickly and forcing consumers to turn to privately supplied milk at higher prices. The cooperative's Central Laboratory is located in the Madhavaram dairy complex, where the plant produces between 400,000 and 450,000 litres of milk a day, processing and marketing between 300,000 and 360,000 litres daily through more than 45 routes across Chennai.
