Dairy farmers in the UK are finally seeing a glimmer of hope as the government introduces new regulations to combat unfair practices within the dairy supply chain. The move aims to address issues such as contract changes being enforced without agreement, negatively impacting farmers and their businesses.
A Cautious Welcome from Farmers as New Milk Contracts Framework Emerges
The new regulations are anticipated to bring transparency to the industry, putting an end to unjust contract alterations. While this development is welcomed by the farming community, caution is advised by Napthens, a reputable north-west law firm with a longstanding commitment to supporting rural and farming communities.

Napthens acknowledges the positive shift but raises awareness that implementing the new contracts could span a period of 18-24 months. Farmers are urged to exercise vigilance and seek legal advice before signing any new agreements.

Andrew Holden, the head of Napthens' rural team, expressed optimism about the news, emphasizing its potential to boost confidence and provide increased security for farming businesses. Despite the positive outlook, he cautions farmers against hastily signing the new contracts, stressing the importance of a thorough legal examination.

Holden explained, “While there will undoubtedly be positive changes within the new contracts, careful scrutiny of all contracts by legal experts is strongly advised.” Napthens offers a 'contract checker' facility, subsidized by the National Farmers' Union (NFU), providing farmers with a valuable tool to ensure fair dealings and optimal value for their products.

“The 'contract checker' is an invaluable tool for farmers, particularly given there will be new contracts being issued in the coming weeks and months," Holden stated. This scrutiny, he emphasizes, will instill long-term confidence among farmers that they are treated fairly and receive the best value for their products.

Highlighting the potential risks of overlooking contract scrutiny, Andrew Holden concluded, “Without scrutiny, they could be faced with similar issues that have impacted their lives and businesses for decades.”
