The size of U.S. dairy farms is expected to grow further in the coming years as economic pressures drive producers toward larger operations, according to Nathan Thomas, a dairy farmer and international livestock judge.

Economic Drivers Behind Farm Expansion
While U.S. milk prices have remained relatively stable in 2024, Thomas notes that long-term margins per cow continue to shrink, leaving many farmers with little choice but to scale up. "Those who want to stay in milk production must increase herd sizes to offset declining profitability per animal," he said.

U.S. dairy producers serve both domestic and export markets, with climate change having minimal direct impact on operations. However, manure management regulations are placing increasing demands on farmers, prompting investments in anaerobic digestion systems to manage waste and generate renewable energy.

Shifts in Breeding Priorities
Thomas also highlighted evolving breeding practices aimed at creating more efficient dairy cows. “The focus is on breeding moderate-sized cows with strong fertility, robust health, and the ability to produce high-quality milk in large quantities,” he said. Foot health and resilience are also prioritized traits.

Global Insights and European Comparisons
Thomas, who recently judged the 2024 Royal Ulster Winter Fair in Northern Ireland, has observed dairying operations worldwide, including in Europe, South America, and Australia. He praised the quality of Irish dairy cattle, noting that many could compete successfully on the global stage.

In Northern Ireland, farm-gate milk prices have risen in recent months, driven by strong demand for dairy products and winter milk bonuses. Local processors emphasized the importance of value-added products to stabilize farm income, given the volatility of commodity markets.

Future Challenges and Opportunities
Looking ahead, U.S. dairy processors are focused on achieving sustainable farm-level pricing and improving processing efficiency. Flattening seasonal production curves to optimize existing capacity remains a key goal.

Despite challenges, Thomas remains cautiously optimistic about the sector’s future. "Investments in technology, breeding, and sustainable practices will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness and meeting evolving market demands," he said.
