Surge in Demand Drives Whey Protein Prices Up by 250% in the U.S.

The global demand for protein-enriched products has triggered a notable increase in the price of whey protein ingredients in the United States. According to data provider Ever.Ag, the price of whey protein concentrate with 80% protein content is now trading at over $13 per pound, marking a 250% increase from the previous year. Whey protein isolate, which contains at least 90% protein, has experienced a 150% rise in price.

This upward trend is reflected in consumer prices, with whey protein concentrate powder seeing a 15% increase over the past year, as reported by Datasembly, a price-tracking company. In Europe, similar price hikes have been observed, with 80% whey protein concentrate reaching a record average price of 26,450 euros per metric ton.

The cheese-making process, which produces whey as a byproduct, is a key source of whey protein. In the United States, declining milk consumption has not affected cheese production, which remains robust, thereby generating significant amounts of whey. However, domestic demand for high-protein snacks and meals is retaining more whey protein for internal use.

U.S. exports of whey protein concentrate and isolate to China have dropped by 47% from January to April compared to the same period last year, as reported by Vesper. This decrease in exports has prompted China to seek whey protein from European sources, which are also experiencing supply constraints.

The rise in demand is partly fueled by the use of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which require users to consume protein-dense foods. Manufacturers are responding by raising prices for whey protein powders and considering alternatives such as milk protein concentrate.

Investments in whey protein production are underway, with companies like Glanbia and Agropur planning to expand capacity. However, these efforts will not yield immediate relief, and higher retail prices may eventually curtail consumer demand, potentially easing wholesale shortages.
