Zabaykalsky Krai Restricts Grazing Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Mongolia

A state of heightened readiness was declared in Zabaykalsky Krai following the worsening epizootic situation of foot-and-mouth disease in Mongolia. This was reported by the governor of the region, Aleksandr Osipov, on October 9.

The regional veterinary service has been tasked with carrying out booster vaccinations of animals against foot-and-mouth disease in 12 districts located near the border. Veterinary units are also instructed to be prepared for the rapid localization and elimination of potential disease outbreaks.

The heads of the border districts have been instructed to prohibit or restrict grazing of livestock within 10 kilometers of the national border. Organized grazing should be used in other areas. Municipal authorities must update information in farm books and notify residents of the new requirements.

Animal owners are required to prevent uncontrolled grazing, report cattle deaths, and report cases of mass disease. The sale of livestock products is only permitted with veterinary documents.

The Ministry of Finance of Zabaykalsky Krai has been instructed to allocate funds from the reserve fund for the purchase of vaccines. “The veterinary service of the region was instructed to conduct booster vaccinations against foot-and-mouth disease in 12 border districts and to keep forces and resources ready to quickly localize and eliminate outbreaks,” wrote Osipov on his channel in the Makh messenger.

Previously, Rosselkhoznadzor announced temporary restrictions on the importation of certain types of livestock products into Russia from the Mongolian aimak of Selenge. The restrictions have been in effect since late September and were introduced due to the foot-and-mouth disease situation in Mongolia.
