Yakult, renowned for its probiotic health drinks, is setting ambitious goals for its market in India, planning to boost sales by approximately 50% in the coming years. This surge is expected to be driven by the introduction of its new mango flavor, capitalizing on the fruit's widespread appeal in India.

Eiji Amano, Managing Director of Yakult Danone India, emphasized the strategic move during the product's launch: "Today, we're not just unveiling a new flavor but reinforcing our commitment to enhancing the health of the Indian population through probiotics."

Yakult Danone India, a joint venture between Tokyo-based Yakult Honsha and Paris's Groupe Danone, began its operations in India in 2008. Since then, Yakult has expanded its reach to 650 cities across the country.

Responding to the Indian consumers' growing health consciousness and concerns over sugar intake, the company introduced "Yakult Light," a low sugar and calorie variant, in 2018. "Yakult Light has quickly become a favorite, now representing 25% of our sales portfolio within just five years," Amano noted. The new mango-flavored "Yakult Light" is tailored exclusively for the Indian market, projected to constitute up to 10% of the company's product lineup in India this year, with potential growth to 15% in the foreseeable future.

Amano projects that the introduction of the mango flavor could increase daily sales from about 200,000 to 300,000 bottles in a few years. The product is priced at 100 rupees ($1.19) for a five-pack in stores and 94 rupees for home delivery.

The brand is well-known for its unique home delivery model, serviced by "Yakult ladies," who are part of a global network of over 80,000, delivering products directly to customers' homes. In India, around 300 Yakult ladies operate in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.
