West Bengal Invests €3.5M in Cutting-Edge Dairy Processing Plant
The government of West Bengal has announced the construction of a high-tech milk processing facility in Debra, situated in the Paschim Medinipur district. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the efficiency of the state's dairy industry, aiming to streamline milk collection and processing logistics.
With a substantial capital budget of approximately 330 million Indian rupees, equivalent to about 3.5 million euros, the project will fund the construction and outfitting of the plant. The facility will feature advanced automated fluid milk processing lines, industrial-scale pasteurizers, and modern cold-storage units. These installations are designed to handle large volumes of raw milk while preserving its quality and nutritional value.
This development is seen as crucial for West Bengal's efforts to become more self-sufficient in milk production and reduce dependency on milk imports from other states. By locating the plant in a high-yield agricultural area, the project aims to reduce transportation times and cooling costs associated with milk collection.
The Debra facility will not only focus on standard milk processing but also include units for producing high-value dairy products. This diversification strategy allows the plant to manage surplus milk and cater to urban markets, potentially enhancing economic returns for local dairy farmers.
The state’s department of animal resources development views this project as a template for future rural development initiatives. The integration of advanced technologies is expected to create jobs in agricultural logistics, plant operations, and veterinary services, supporting the local economy.
This investment marks a significant step in strengthening the dairy sector in West Bengal, aiming to meet the growing demand for dairy products in urban areas while supporting rural economies.
