Warning Issued for Screwworm and Drought Impacting Campeche Dairy Sector

Challenges in Campeche's Dairy Sector

Liconsa has raised alarms about the risks that the screwworm and ongoing drought present to the dairy cattle in Campeche. Despite the state’s favorable conditions for boosting livestock growth with federal support led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, these issues require urgent attention.

According to Liconsa's state manager, Abid Flores Moo, farmers are urged to be vigilant against the complications that these factors might usher, particularly in regions like Champotón, Campeche, Escárcega, Candelaria, and Carmen. These municipalities are responsible for about 85.3% of the state's milk production. Campeche produces around 46 million liters of milk annually, reflecting its significant contribution to Mexico's dairy industry.

The presence of the screwworm in the state could severely affect the livestock and dairy sectors, prompting calls for reinforced preventive measures and heightened animal health protocols.

Drought Concerns

The drought issue further compounds the situation, with Flores Moo advising local dairy producers to secure ample water supplies for their production centers. As per data from the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development and its “water footprint” indicator, a single glass (200 ml) of milk requires 200 liters of water in its production process.

Liconsa’s caution underlines the critical need for sustainable water management and health practices to shield Campeche’s dairy sector from these pressing threats.
