Virtual Fencing Technology Gains Ground in South Australia

The introduction of virtual fencing technology in South Australia marks a significant development for local farmers, offering them greater visibility and control over their properties. This innovation allows producers to move beyond the reliance on fixed infrastructure and manual processes.

Robert Brokenshire, a farmer from Mount Compass and president of the South Australian Dairyfarmers' Association (SADA), noted the active participation of the association in legislative changes that made the technology's introduction possible. He expressed hope that dairy producers and other livestock farmers would embrace the technology, similar to its adoption in Tasmania.

Travis Tobin, CEO of Livestock SA, described the approval as a milestone, granting farmers access to the first commercial virtual fencing system under the new state regulatory framework. He emphasized the importance of clear rules and animal welfare criteria accompanying the technology's rollout.

While Tobin acknowledged that virtual fencing may not be suitable for every property, he stressed the need for continuous monitoring, training, and technical support to ensure the expected benefits. Among the advantages cited are reduced time spent on routine tasks like moving cattle and maintaining fences, as well as continuous herd monitoring.

The technology also impacts farm safety by decreasing the need for constant movement, manual handling of cattle, and the associated risks. This reduction in activity addresses concerns related to quad bike accidents, fatigue, and solitary work, which have been identified as leading causes of severe accidents on Australian farms.
