During the winter season, Irish farmers buy jackets for calves
Animal jacket manufacturers have sold thousands of calf jackets in Ireland this season. The reason for the demand is simple - many farms do not have enough straw, and winter temperatures are much lower than the optimal level for the growth and development of calves.
For calves to reach their maximum growth potential, barn air temperatures of 15-20°C are required. With winter and very early spring calvings, this is impossible to achieve in a conventional barn.
Calves are usually provided with a deep bed of straw to keep them warm. Otherwise, the body's forces, which should be aimed at growth and weight gain, will be redirected to warming and maintaining body temperature.
Experts advise giving priority to the smallest calves when it comes to straw. Experts also recommended placing wood chips under the straw to help the litter stay dry longer.
