219 Cases of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Detected in Cattle in China
Outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease have been reported in two cattle herds in northwestern China. The Ministry of Agriculture of China stated that the cases were identified in Gansu Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
In total, the diagnosis has been confirmed in 219 animals within two herds, comprising 6,229 heads of cattle.
The government confirmed that the cases involve the SAT1 serotype of foot-and-mouth disease.
In response to the outbreaks, local authorities in Xinjiang and Gansu have taken measures to cull the infected animals and carry out disinfection.
According to industry analysts, this is the first instance of the SAT1 serotype entering China, and the existing vaccines in the country do not provide cross-protection against this strain.
