Infected animals were found to have serotypes 1, 3, 4, and 8 of the bluetongue virus. Since April 1, 2025 (note: date mentioned as future in the original text), outbreaks have been identified in 24 out of 50 provinces in the country, indicating the widespread presence of the four circulating virus serotypes in Spain.

The Ministry emphasizes that vaccination is the only effective measure to contain the spread of the disease. “Vaccination is the best means to prevent infection and mortality among livestock, and it also facilitates the movement of animals to other countries,” Animal’s Health quotes MAPA’s statement.
